Finalist in FIFA World Cup in Russia

Twenty years after finishing third at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, the Croatian national team, "Vatreni," reached the final this time, where they were ultimately overpowered by the French team in a thrilling match (4– 2). On their way, they defeated Nigeria, Argentina, and Iceland, and eliminated Denmark, Russia, and England. Upon their return to the homeland, half a million people gave the silver-winning footballers an unprecedented welcome. The captain of the Croatian national team, Luka Modrić, was named the best footballer of the World Cup, Europe (UEFA), and the world (FIFA) that year, and he also won the Ballon d'Or. However, a few months later, Croatia achieved revenge in tennis, winning the Davis Cup for the second time by defeating France in the final (3–1).

Croatia bids farewell to Oliver in song

The giant of Croatian music, Oliver Dragojević, died at the age of 70, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many. His voice, like a sea wave, carried emotions that bridged generations. Born in Split, with the sea in his soul, Oliver sang about love, nostalgia, and Dalmatian life, and his songs became anthems of life on the Adriatic coast. He was special for his authenticity, simplicity, and sincerity. With his distinctive voice and interpretations, Oliver became a synonym for Dalmatian song not only in Croatia but also around the world. His departure marked the end of an era in Croatian music. Croatia lost an artist beyond all categories, a man whose songs will continue to live on as a lasting monument to beauty and emotion. During his funeral, tens of thousands of people bid him farewell with his songs, and a myriad of boats accompanied him to his final resting place. Additionally, a National Day of Tribute was declared in his honour.
