A challenging Croatian EU presidency
From January 1 to June 30, Croatia held the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time, under the slogan "A Strong Europe in a World of Challenges," which quickly proved to be more than fitting. During this period, Croatia and the EU faced significant challenges, from Brexit, which marked the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, to the coronavirus pandemic that claimed tens of thousands of lives across Europe, halted social life, and slowed down the economy. Moreover, with the formation of a new composition of European institutions, the EU was at the beginning of a new institutional and legislative cycle. Additionally, the city of Rijeka was also the European Capital of Culture in 2020. And as if that wasn't enough for one year, Croatia was also struck by two devastating earthquakes in March and December, in Zagreb and Petrinja.
